The movie Glory starts off with Robert Shaw leading Union soldiers to an attack on the Confederates. His soldiers and he suffered a very big loss and Shaw ends up getting wounded and later ended up losing consciousness. While Shaw is getting medical attention he is informed that President Lincoln is on his way to passing the Emancipation Proclamation. Shaw is then pronounced Colonel and in charge of the first all black regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Thomas Searles, who is a friend of Shaw’s and a very educated black man, was the first volunteer soldier. An escaped slave named Tripp and a free black man named Jupiter Shart also joined the first all black regiment. Shaw started to realize that the men in his unit were only use to manual labor and goes to his commanding offices Harker and Montgomery to get his men into combat. While confronting them he realizes the offices were involved in war profiteering and corruption and Shaw threatens to report them to the War department if his regiment is not put in combat. Their first battle in South Carolina was successful and the next battle was set in Fort Wagner. They start to charge upon the fort, where Shaw and numerous other of his men were killed.

Colonel Shaw initially thought that they wouldn’t make good soldiers and he didn’t want to take the position as a Colonel. He and pretty much every other white men at the time had a difficult time being prejudice against the black race. As the movie went on Shaw started to realize that it didn’t matter what color they were that they were soldiers either way. At the end of the movie instead of giving the men orders and fighting on his horse Shaw let him horse go and led them into the battle at Fort Wagner. Overtime Thomas’ character started to become a better soldier. When he first enlisted he was just Shaw’s friend.
