The Universities had approached Onondaga's nation by offering them the chance to send young men from the tribes to be educated in the ways of science. However, once the young men returned fully educated from the universities, they seemed to be of no use to the nation, but the chief expresses his gratitude towards the universities by offering them the chance to send their young men to be educated in the ways of his nation. Thus, as an honest chief, Onondaga Canassatego expresses his judgment without falsely implying that the education given to the young men of his nation was useful; as a reverential man, the chief demonstrates his gratitude and respect for the universities by offering them a chance to send a dozen of their sons to be edified in the methods of his nation (Balanced Sentence).

The chief presented his most sincere response towards the proposal for education, which was provided by the university to educate the natives in science, but was severed as it was deemed useless to his nation. (Loose Sentence). The chief states that they previously sent young men to study at the universities to be brought up by science, but upon their return they were "bad runners, ignorant in all means of living in the woods, unable to bear either cold or hunger, knew neither how to build a cabin, take a deer, or kill an enemy, spoke our language imperfectly, therefore were neither fit for hunters, warriors, nor councilors. They were totally good for nothing." What use would the Chief have for the young men without these traits? (Rhetorical Sentence). The Chief does not wish to be offensive; however he is not shy in denoting the differences in education among the provinces.
