It is the sad truth that just about all business has unethical conduct well, I see it every day in my own work place and I am forced to deal with it on a daily basis. I currently retain employment in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility that is ran by a nonprofit organization. I have found that many of the situations that occur in our facility come from the lack of Human Service skills that the employees have. Many of the managers hold no degree or, degrees in other fields that have nothing to do with human services. This becomes a challenge when it is time to help clients or manage care with current clients.

Many posses the wrong attitude towards clients because they do not know better and has not had the proper training to deal with clients.

Many of the skills stated in the book such as, ability to build trust, ability to make mutual contract, ability to communicate well in writing and speech, ability to listen actively are just a few that has occurred and made it difficult to be an effective helper. The supervisor is supposed to be able to manage her stress level but I have found that she is poor at doing this so it reflects harshly on the organization.

If I were to become a human service supervisor there are some things that I would address differently than my current situation. My first technique would be to make sure everyone at least has some type of history working in the helping field; then I would lay out specific procedures for their purpose and ours. Also I would use an evaluation system for each employee annually to make sure all the criteria’s and needs are being met. By doing this it will make sure each staff member has a voice and monitor if the staff member is becoming burned out.
