My Learning Style

Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences is a great way to look at how you learn and how that style impacts your life. I learned a lot from taking the assessment and really got to look at how it has impacted my life from the time I was little to now.

My learning style is that of Intrapersonal and Interpersonal, meaning that I think with my feelings about myself and others. According to Gardner and Intrapersonal thinker is one that can understand their own behavior and feelings, shows self awareness and independence. An Interpersonal thinker is one that can relate to others by noticing their moods and feelings. Looking at the path I have taken to become a nurse and work in the medical field I can see exactly where those learning styles have impacted my decision.

Ever since I was about 13 I began reading medical books and watching medical shows, I became intrigued by the medical aspect of it all but mostly I saw how the interaction between patient and medical personnel made a difference in the recovery and healing of those patients. I decided that I wanted to be involved in this caring and rewarding field. I can remember playing doctor on my stuffed animals and talking to them like they were a patient, I smile every time I think about that. Whenever my friends or my family got hurt, whether falling on the playground or just emotionally down I was right there to comfort them and offer my assistance, albeit just a band aid at the time. Even today my mom or my friends will call me with their medical questions and their thoughts on a situation, asking me my opinion and how I would solve it. It's funny that I never really thought to deeply about these experiences or even put them into a category of thinking style but doing this assessment has given me a new perspective on the type of person I am.

This assessment focused on my strengths but not my weaknesses. I can say that my weakness is that I don't stand up for myself when the need arises, I tend to back down and make sure others around me are good before I even think about myself. I can give only one example that comes to mind and that was at my last job as a medical assistant. The manager
