1. Distinguish between Qualitative Research and Quantitative Research

Qualitative research is purely exploratory. Its purpose is to understand opinions and motivations. It is used as a preliminary for quantitative research that is, to develop ideas and hypothesis for the research topic. The data collection techniques used in this research method are unstructured of semi- structured. The data is collected through interviews, discussion groups and for a were by the sample sizes are small and the respondents are chosen to fill a preset number (Wyse, 2011).

Quantitative research on the other hand uses numbers and analysis to draw its conclusions (Wyse, 2011). It is structured and its quantifies opinions, behaviors and other specified variables. It uses scientific methods to generalize results form a large sample population. It uses various data collection methods including surveys, interviews, polls and systematic observations. It is a formal method of research that is used in various disciplines to put forward new ideas or to prove existing ones. In nursing it is used to determine which methods of primary and secondary care work on patients. It also forms the basis for evidence based care.

2. Explain the roles and the responsibilities of nurses in identifying, investigating and utilizing research to facilitate health among health care consumers.

Research is a vital part of health care service, it is significant to ensuring the provision of effective and safe health and social care (Nass, Levit, Gostin, & Rule, 2009). Nursing research involves identifying new methods of patient care and utilizing these methods to improve the patient experience. It also involves looking for new treatments that will help in improving health in their regions.
