lab 1

Introduction

This lab is designed to help the student become familiar with some of the common measuring devices used in organic chemistry. The student will also determine volume and density of objects.

The Assignment

After reading all of the safety precautions in your lab manual, you will be performing experiment #1 in your lab book "Laboratory Techniques and Measurements."

Product Specifications

All lab reports are individual although working in pairs to perform the lab is allowed.

Follow the sample lab report given in your lab manual to write up your report for this experiment. The primary parts of the lab write-up are:

1.Title,

2.Purpose,

3.Procedure,

4.Data/observations,

5.Calculations (where applicable),

6.Results,

7.Conclusions

8.Answers to ALL pre/post lab questions

9.Pictures of your work (required in order for the lab to count!)

To Submit

Using Microsoft Word (or save your file as .rtf) and submit here using the 'add submission' button.

lab 2 (a)

Introduction

Enantiomers are two stereoisomers that are related to each other by a reflection: they are mirror images of each other. Two compounds that are enantiomers of each other have the same physical properties, except for the direction in which they rotate polarized light and how they interact with different optical isomers of other compounds. As a result, different enantiomers of a compound may have substantially different biological effects.

Diastereomers are stereoisomers not related through a reflection operation; they are not mirror images of each other. These include meso compounds, cis-trans (E-Z) isomers, and non-enantiomeric optical isomers. Diastereomers seldom have the same physical properties.

These labs are designed to help the student visualize organic compounds in three dimensions and to reinforce the concepts of stereochemistry. The shape and arrangement of the molecules is important to its function, as we explore here and in our module on proteins.

The Assignment

After reading all of the safety precautions in your lab manual, you will be performing experiments #7 and #8 in your lab book "Stereochemistry 1" and "Stereochemistry
