What is research?

Research is the methodical investigation and study of materials and sources which in result can found new facts and new circumstances. It is used to research new topics which will then help produce new information so topics can be identified to its full to improve it.

Why healthcare professionals should engage in research:

The Clinical Research Network is currently working with healthcare professionals all over England who, along with their patients are enthusiastically benefiting from taking part in clinical research. In the long run, clinical research means patients get access to new treatments, interventions and medicines and investment in research means better, more cost-effective patient care.

The main functions of research.

1. It benefits all patients:

As a healthcare professional, it is your job to give patients the best help and care they need. Taking part in clinical network studies, it is an idea that you can help your patients with different treatment options. In addition, individuals who have treatment in network research conditions are more likely to have better healthcare than those who are treated in a non-research environment. Benefits include:

• A better understanding or management of their condition

• Additional contact and a partnership relationship with their health professionals

• Altruistically being able to give something back to the NHS, and contribute to better treatments

2. It is a patient priority:

It is very clear that all patients value research because they know that they may benefit from clinical research using new treatments, interventions and medicines
