Reward System Worksheet

Respond to the following questions in 200-300, that is, 100 to 150 each.

  1. How do the physiological, psychological, and social needs described in the textbook influence workplace reward systems?

According to Reeves (2009), when one person is given an offering from another person in exchange for a service, participation or achievement it is deemed as a reward. Workplace reward systems have many uses when used properly to motivate employees. Not every employee will be motivated the same way though so we have to dig deeper to find out which of the three types of needs they are driven by. Physiological needs are based more towards the body’s need to function so you might be driven to perform faster if you’re offered a break time for a snack to keep your energy level fueled. Psychological needs are based on human nature and find that being able to connect teams together through common interests boost productivity and moral in the office. Social needs are based on emotional and socialization. Social needs in the workplace can be commonly found when achieving a goal or internalizing an accomplishment.

  1. How can these systems affect employee motivation?

The three systems can bring workplace moral up or down depending on the reward and situation. Reeves (2009) states “All needs generate energy”. When you take into account that all energy can become negative or positive based on the interaction and need exhibited, there are many different results possible to reinforce motivation. To feed the social and psychological needs of employees it is key to praise your employees often to give them motivation to succeed in the tasks you are requesting. When physiological needs are not met you can see a drastic decline in the quality of work your employee’s are performing, just as you will see a drastic improvement of work when meeting their needs for breaks to eat, rest, replenish and recharge.
