Disorder of Interest Paper

Mental illness is a referred to a wide range of mental health conditions and disorders that affect a person’s mood, thinking, and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. Some of these conditions and disorders can be sought out through counseling, therapy, or psychiatric therapy. But mainly these conditions and disorders can also be sought out through a doctor’s supervision by prescribing combinations medicine. Also people who suffer from a more chronic mental illness are placed in a psychiatric home or hospital.

First and for most mental illness dates back as early as 5000 BCE as evidence being discovered of trephine skulls and the different bone structure compared to the other bones. Back in those days and that time error people who suffered from a mental illness was a result of supernatural phenomena, demonic possession, sorcery, and many more. But back then other people thought those people were that because they did not know anything about mental health conditions. Another thing there are more than 200 classified forms of mental illness. Symptoms may include mood changes, split personality, personal habits and/ or social withdrawal. The majority of people who have mental illness can take medication. According to the authors “a large proportion of the global population: 7.6% of the USA population, 12 years of age and older report to have severe depression symptoms” (Matija, Tamas, 2016).

Second the range of impairment for this disorder usually involves with schizophrenia, because most mentally ill people have schizophrenia. People, who have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, have significant “co-occurring cognitive impairment” according to the author (Amdur, 2011). Also the range of impairment for this disorder can affect a person who has a mental illness cannot function as normal as a regular human being. Due to the mood changes and so forth.  That is what makes them different from us because their brain doesn’t function 100% and they function at a different pace and do things differently.

Third the implications mental illness have on this society is different why? Because when people hear or see a person who have a mental illness are judged and labeled as crazy. Which is not right at all, because what if one of us had this condition how would we feel being called crazy, lunatics, idiots and many more nasty names. For example how would you feel if you had a mental illness and your out and about and people are just staring and calling you names. How would you feel? You will probably feel horrible, sad, depress or so forth and your feeling would be hurt as well. Just imagine what these people actually feel and go through on a daily basis. No matter if that person had a disability; just imagine kids making fun of a disabled girl or boy at school. We are all human and each and one of us have feelings and emotions and being teased or called names is neither fun nor cute at all. I was always taught to not judge, and put myself in their shoes. How would I feel afterwards? I would feel terrible and depress because I wouldn’t want to be called any names nor laughed at because I had a disability that made me stand out from the rest of the crowd. I would want to be treated with respect and looked at the same and not different.
