I have an elder cousin called Ariel in Shanghai, she was about 8-years older than me. She was married and had a 8-year old son. I would like to tell a story between this mother and her son, catch the emotional intelligence competences they demonstrated.

In China, parents usually send their kids to kindergarten when the children are between 3-6 years old. Ariel sent her son to kindergarten when he was 3, because she had her own work and didn’t have so much time to take care of the little kid. She brought her son to the kindergarten in the morning and picked him up in the afternoon everyday. She was concerned about her son and often talked to the teachers in kindergarten to know the behaviors of her son.

One day, the teacher told Ariel: Your son did badly in the class. He was so naughty that he couldn’t even sit down on the chair for 3 minutes. You’d better bring him to see the doctor. On their way home, the son asked his mother what did teacher talk to her? Ariel was upset and sad, because her son was the last in 30-kids’ class, and his teacher disliked him. But she told her son: Teacher appreciated you because you couldn’t sit down on chair for 1 minute before, and now you can sit down for 3 minutes. Other kids’ mother admired me since you are the only one who made big progress in this class. In that night, Ariel’s son was so happy that ate more food than usual by himself without mother’s feeding. After that day, the kid did better in kindergarten and learned to behave properly. And now, he has been the top student in the primary school.

It is the real story took place on Ariel and her son. I can learn a lot and benefit a lot from her. In this case, she used a lot of emotional intelligence competence. At first, she has the adaptability. She adapted the situation that her son was the last in his class quickly, and she made decision to overcome this trouble. Secondly, Ariel has the emotional self-control.
