Mandatory Military Service

I believe military service should be strictly voluntary. Seeing as how the United States treats veterans so poorly, entire generations would be left like a lot of veterans today, homeless, suffering from PTSD without therapy, and finding it difficult to find a job. Also, we have more than enough people serving right now, America needs to be trying to pay its debts rather than pour even more money into our armed forces. Most of all, a lot of people disagree with certain wars or war in general, like the war on terrorism, some people believe it is just a ploy to steal oil from the middle east, others believe it is wrong for the huge loss of civilian life caused by the US’ presence. Over all, the idea of conscription just would not go well in America.

Veterans in America today are treated so bad, a lot of them suffer from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) which can cause troubling flashbacks of said trauma and hyper arousal, and they never receive treatment. Lack of treatment can cause prolonged symptoms, and some people are driven to abuse alcohol or drugs, and sometimes even suicide. Some are left homeless, the fighting being the only thing they know how to do, they are unable to find a job, and are most of the people you see drifting or living under bridges, unable to provide for themselves, even though they were once seen as heroes, they are now seen as just some “bum on the street”, and if you are a whistle blower you are seen as a traitor by many, and will be forced to live in prison or leave the country and go into hiding even though you try to do what is right by exposing the US for war crimes you will be hunted down since most of the politicians are extremely corrupt. Until America starts trying to care for its veterans, joining the armed forces is just too much of a risk.
