Facebook: The Social Killer or Helpful Tool

One of the biggest phenomenon’s of this generation is Facebook and with more than nine hundred million members, it proves to still be very popular among that demographic. Facebook was originally created for Stanford University students to have a social networking site, but now anyone from thirteen and older can become a member. As a social networking site, Facebook can be defined as an online platform where users create profiles, generate and share contents and information, and interact with other known and unknown contacts (Boyd and Ellison, 2007). Facebook can be a wonderful and useful website to reconnect with long lost friends, find new friends, and to expand networking resources. However, Facebook is a website that, if not used properly, can consume the majority of someone’s time and can lead to a lack of face to face social interaction with others.

Facebook has so many members that the website has become very popular to reconnect with old friends and family. For many the Internet has been used to try and reconnect with others from their past. It used to be an extensive time consuming and very frustrating event just to hunt down one friend from the past. In the most recent years, Facebook has revolutionized being able to locate anyone by using its incredible simple search engine. This has lead to numerous people finding and reconnecting with old classmates, friends, acquaintances, and family members. Facebook has simplified the search process with a simple and convenient search bar that instantly pulls up hundreds of results in which to search. Many different graduates still keep in touch with friends and acquaintances from high school and college all because of Facebook. Also, many professors and bosses have been known to get a Facebook profile to help connect with their students and employees.

Facebook is not just an excellent place to reconnect with people, but to meet new and exciting individuals. If someone wanted to find a new friend or acquaintance they could simply search their friend’s friend list or by Facebook’s option to pit individuals together because of any common interest or information of their profile
