THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

There was once an old woodcutter who had a wife, as old as he was. One hot day, he became thirsty and drank from a stream from which, for one particular reason, he had never drunk before. The water was clear and flowed swiftly and had a peculiarly delicious taste.

The stream came from a small pool and he went to it, the better to quench his thirst. As he knelt down he saw his reflection in the pool and it was all but unrecognizable; he saw the face which had been his as a young man. Joyously, he realized he had drunk from the fountain of youth. Running in a manner of which he had not been capable for many years, returned home to his wife. After some dificulty, he persuaded her that he who spoke with voice she knew well and whose features, for all their youthfulness, were familiar. Was indeed her husband.

Reasonably she said she, too, must drink of the same water: he would soon tire of a wife so many years older than he had become. The woodcutter told her where the little pool from which the stream sprang was and, alone, she hurried on her way. The old woman was instructed to drink just enough to quench her thirst. Her husband waited for her with considerable impatience and doubtless, curiosity. When after an interval during which she should have returned, there was no sign of her, he went in search of his wife who was, like him, to be young again.
