MINTZBERG’S MANAGEMENT ROLES

In the late 1960s, Henry Mintzberg, a student at MIT, observed managers to know what they do in their jobs. He concluded that there are 10 different , highly interrelated roles that are performed by managers in their jobs. Each role is different, thus spanning the variety of all identified management behaviours. When collected together as an integrated whole (gestalt), the capabilities and competencies of a manager can be further evaluated in a role-specific way.

The best illustration under this Mintzberg’s role is: The position of Director of any B-School or reputed institute. Same duties are being performed by the Director, Dr Gopal Iyenger in KIAMS by coordinating with the respective department heads. He is at the apex position of the KIAMS Institute.

INTERPERSONAL ROLES

1. Figurehead role: In the figurehead role, the Director performs all the ceremonial and symbolic duties as head of the KIAMS, for example heading the inaugural function of Batch 13, etc.

2. Leader role: In leader’s role, Director fosters a proper work atmosphere and motivates and develops subordinates to keep their interest in their work and maintain the result of the persons of the institutes. For example this KIAMS is not just an institute, this is a family.

3. Liaison role: Director with the as as a liaison officer, develops and maintains a network of external contacts to gather information, for example Alumni’s, companies for placements, Kirloskar brothers and companies and other useful parties for the better of the institute.

INFORMATIONAL ROLES

Associated with the tasks needed to obtain and transmit information for management of the organization. The unique access to information places the manager at the centre of organizational decision making.

4. Monitor role: Director as monitor gathers internal and external information relevant to the institute, for example any kind of activities related to KIAMS admissions, placements etc are collected by heads of the respective departments.
