Leadership Style Based on Fictional Character

Introduction

Various traits exist that make up an effective leader. The objective of this report is to select a leader, real-life or fictional, and analyze this leader using leadership theories. I will also cite specific examples of leadership qualities that brought about success and compare them to my own style.

The Leader

A leader that I’ve always admired is the fictional character by the name of Superman. Superman is not the typical leader in the sense of having followers whom he commands. He is a leader in how he represents himself and the people he cares about. He is highly prominent in physical stature and strength. Having these traits commands attention, creates a sense of grandness, and typically garners respect almost immediately. Superman also exemplifies what it means to have a high moral value. Giving everyone a chance, forgiving others, and allowing them to make amends with their wrong doings. He also takes time to establish relationships with everyone from the common man to those who might hold positions similar in status to his own. Superman would appear to attain a number of different leadership theories including relationship, behavioral, trait, and contingency theories. Superman seeks to open everyone’s eyes to their own potential of doing great things, and to motivate them into doing so with his own capabilities. He is highly intelligent, but that aspect is almost kept a secret. With his intelligence being an afterthought, his followers form their opinions on how he conducts himself and his actions. Confronted with different situations, Superman may also take charge through a show of force. Despite his unique skillset, its can debated to whether or not he subscribes to the Great Man theory. As great as Superman is, he still feels as though he has been placed into his role on Earth rather “being than called upon or destined to accept this challenge” (August Turak, April 2013). It’s part of his inner struggle. He still has a sense of insecurity about himself and has an internal struggle that he constantly deals with. He definitely was not a born leader, rather the combination of his attributes and experiences that lead to him to this role.

Evaluate my leadership style

My leadership style is formed around the Relationship, Behavioral, and Contingency theories. I don’t fit into the Great Man Theory of leadership. I wasn’t the born leader type, but I am still learning what it takes to become an effective leader. I don’t have a strong physical appearance that commands people’s respect and attention. However, I do take time to ensure that I have a clean cut, professional physical presentation that allows people to take me seriously.
