Comparison-Contrast Topic Selection

After carefully studying Wordsmith Chapter 10, I have decided to do my comparison-contrast essay on how apartment living offers advantages over home owner ship. A few things I will discuss in my essay are luxury, mobility, and freedom from chores. My paper will allow the audience to see the joys of renting or owning your own property.

As students, we know that the first step to the writing process is prewriting. Over the last couple of days, I have been experimenting with the different forms of prewriting from brainstorming to freewriting. I started with brainstorming, I started writing down advantages and disadvantages of both apartment living and home ownership. An advantage of apartment living is that the landlord is responsible for any major repairs, where home owners must repair things on their own. I then began to start freewriting. Freewriting is where you just start writing your thoughts down not worrying about spelling or if your thoughts are logically correct. I prefer to use freewriting because it allows me to get all my thought down on paper all at once without worrying if its correct or not, but lets me know where I want to go with my paper.

Throughout my paper my audience will see a couple of comparison-contrast points being made. One I will talk about is how when you are apartment living you can just get up and move anywhere in the world you want, where with home ownership you don’t have the option of mobility. I say this because when you own your property you can’t just up and move it’s a process. You, must begin with putting your house on the market. Secondly, I will talk about how with apartment living the landlord is responsible for property up keep and fix major repairs. Where if you owner your property you have to replace roof, appliances, and maintain the property up keep.
