Dracula begins with a diary entry created by Jonathon Harker as he embarks on his first professional assignment from England to the Castle of Count Dracula in Transylvania, Eastern Europe. The purpose of his trip is to conclude a real estate dal to sell Count Dracula a residence in London. Throughout Jonathons journey he keeps a detailed diary of his adventure and thoughts, so he can share them with his fiancée, Mina murry when he returns.

Throughout chapter 1 Johnathon describes his journey through the countryside and exotic foods he eats on his way to a northen Romanian town of Bistriz. Here he checks into a hotel and receives a letter from the Count, welcoming him to the beautiful Carpathian mountains , and informing him to take the next day’s coach to the Borgo Pass, where a carriage will meet him to bring him the rest of the way to the castle.

The morning harker prepares to leave he is warned that it is the eve of St. Georges Day, when “all the evil things in the world will have full sway”. He is presented with a crucifix, which disturbes him though he politly accepts it. As he boards the coach, a group of peasents gather around he inn, muttering many words which johnathon translates to mean “vampire or were-wolf”. The crowd increase his uneasiness when they make the sign of the cross in his direction, a gesture that a fellow passenger explains is meant to protect him from the “evil eye” as they depart.

Throughout the trip on the coach the passengers offer Johnathon small gifts and tokens, he presumes are to ward off the evil eye. Soon after arriving at the Borgo Pass a small horse drawn carriage appears, which he boards and continues on his journey towards the castle. He has the impression he is covering the same ground over and over again, as his fears increase and is soon spoked by the wild howling of wolves.
