Crafting a Negative Business Message

Since our store has opened in the 1930s we have performed exceptionally well in both local and national markets. The store achieved a strong competitive advantage over the years which generated a positive revenue stream yearly. As employees of this store, you have always done an outstanding job contributing to the growth of the business and which has allowed the store to attain maximum profit. However, the store is facing a major challenge that will have a direct impact on our employees regardless of your number of years of service. As you are all aware, a discount retailer has moved into our local neighborhood around one year ago. This retailer’s presence and their business approach has negatively affected our store’s performance. Since this retailer is part of a national chain they are able to offer low prices for the same products that we offer which has created a price war scenario.

As a result of this price war scenario, our sales have drastically dropped which has made it difficult for our store to compete with this retailer. Over the past year we have made many changes to try and compete and remain profitable but it has come to the point that a difficult decision has had to be made which will affect all of our valued employees. After many discussions, much deliberation, and careful consideration the decision has been made to close the store effective January 1st.

This has been a difficult decision and management wants to ensure that our employees receive proper compensation and as much assistance needed to transition to another employment opportunity. The compensation plan that has been chosen is one in which every employee will receive a severance package that will be equal to one week of pay for every year of employment with the store. The company will also offer training, career guidance, counseling, and team building sessions to assist our employees prepare for the transition because of this difficult decision. The company is bond legally and ethically to reward and compensate its valued employees during these unfortunate times. Employee benefits will be offered in accordance with the contract of each employee in reference to the closure of the company.
