Comparison essay of “sense and sensibility”

The title “sense and sensibility” set up the story that happen surround by those two ways of thinking, behaving and knowing of the two main character Elinor and Marianne. Two sisters go through their personal situation and events which allow us to make compare and contrast between them. The most distinguishable way for them is to look at the aspect of psychologically thinking. According to the understanding, Elinor, the older sister, represent the characteristic of “sense”. She has several characteristics that make she becomes a sense person. Self-control, responsibilities to the social and clear minded for the benefit that concern with others, these characteristic make she becomes a sense person. And Marianne, the younger sister, represents the characteristic of sensibility. She has several characteristics that make she becomes a sensibility person. Emotional, spontaneity, impulsiveness, and rapturous devotion, these characteristic make she becomes a sensibility person. Whereas Elinor hide her admire to Edward Ferras, Marianne is not, she is openly and publicity her love to John Willoughby.

At the beginning of the film Elinor is a motherly and useful person which makes her a practical character. Apparently Elinor is the one who have a clear minded one compare to Marianne. When Dashwoods find out that they have lost their home, she is the one to take control and persuade the families to move out from the tree house. But compare to Marianne, she act likes she is trying her best to make others understand what she is thinking by acting without concerning others; She act before she think, even when she is at Fanny’s party; she go mad in the party and ride through the streets with Willoughby.

Elinor is mostly the one keeping things together and does not worry about her own affairs. She finish things as in orders, mostly she does not solve a problem with her emotion. For her is “always prudence and honor and duty.” When she was been told that Edward has a secret engagement to Lucy, even though it was a burden to her, she is able to keep it in secret. This show the loyalty and promises are higher than everything even if it is suffering. Marianne is the opposite; she believes with her heart and allows it to lead her to do. And without thinking the consequence she can do everything that the feeling leads Marianne to do. Many times when it is very possible to rain she still insists to go for a walk because she is in the mood of walk.
