Cars are Necessary for freshmen

Many colleges do not allow their incoming freshmen to have cars with them on campus, our school being one of them. I believe the school will not allow cars for freshmen because they want them to stay on campus and get familiarized with the campus. My question is, why wouldn’t freshmen become familiarized with the campus with or without cars, what would stop them? Even though the school does not believe we need our cars, there are many legitimate reasons why we do. Without cars freshmen would have trouble getting to certain places for their classes, even with public transportation if that is missed we end up stranded, and it would be highly beneficial to families.

Since we are not allowed to have cars our first year, it is a hassle to get places for certain classes. Professors know that we cannot just go where ever we want when we to. Yet they still give us assignments that have to be completed off campus. For example, our theatre class has to attend a play at the Wells Theatre located in downtown Norfolk. The professors should be more understanding of our situation. Having all assignments on campus would increase the chance of students actually completing them with ease. Students need to go grocery shopping for themselves, when we get what we need it is very inconvenient for us to carry everything we bought on the bus. Just imagine having to carry three or four bags onto a bus where anything can happen. With a car it would be easier for them to go to the store and much safer.

As of today, students tend to miss the bus back to campus a lot when there are enjoying a day off of campus. Just last weekend a friend of mine and her friends had missed the shuttle to campus from the mall, so they had to walk a good hour before hitching a ride from a random lady. The women wouldn’t drop them off exactly on campus so they had walk the rest of the way. With this in mind having a car wouldn’t just be easier, but a lot safer. Many students start to freak out when they have no idea how to get back to the first stop they got on the bus. It will allow us to stay off the streets, and not roam around at night. Freshmen are told to take the shuttle, even when students take the shuttle they still have to walk a good distance before they actually reach their destination. This wouldn’t be a problem if they had their own transportation.
