Introduction

The purpose of this report topic is on leadership, specifically transformational leadership and impact on team performance. With globalisation, innovation and fast technology, transformational leadership skills is becoming very essential for company’s success. Leaders are required to motivate staff, give them directions, enhance their confidence so they can accomplish their tasks and mneet the organisations’ goals. According to Judge & Piccolo (cited in Keskes 2014) Several studies have shown that staffs’ loyalty, commitment, performance and satisfaction are linked to transformational leadership. According to Chen, Samad & Abdullah, Sattayaraksa & Boon (as cited in Alsolami et al.2016) Research in management practices has placed great emphasis on the critical role of leadership in achieving an organization’s vision and mission, and to face challenges especially during turbulent times.  .

Leadership definition

House & Javidan (as cited in Ferdosi & Mosadeghrad 2013) states that leadership is the ability of a manager to influence, motivate, and enable employees to contribute toward organizational success. Daft (as cited by Sikalieh et al. 2016) defines leadership as the ability of one to influence others towards the attainment of set goals and objectives. Ololube (as cited in Amanchukwu et al. 2015) states that leadership involves a type of responsibility aimed at achieving particular ends by applying the available resources (human and material) and ensuring a cohesive and coherent organization in the process. Similarly Northouse and Rowe (as cited in Uzohue et al. 2016) viewed leadership as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal and success of the organization. According to Kellerman (as cited in Silva, 2016), states that the leadership process occurs in a given context, if the context changes the leadership process will also be different.  Ogbeidi (as cited in Abasilim 2014), defined leadership as a body of people who lead and direct the activities of a group towards shared goal. It refers to the ability to lead, direct and organise a group.   In addition, Dran (as cited in Ali, 2012) have defined Leadership in the words ―The ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals‖. Daane and Weiner (2011) re-defined leadership as, “to inspire, motivate, and give direction to groups and individuals to pursue a common purpose.” In this context, leadership is applicable at many levels and effective leadership can be applied in all facets of life ranging from management to individual coaching, from parenthood to interpersonal relationships. Sloane, (as cited in Wadhwa & Parimo 2013) states that the leader therefore, adopts higher levels of creativity and risk taking.
