  1. Synthesis

Consolidated Motors (CM) has been one of the largest and profitable company in Australian automotive industry.  Impervious to the changes occurring in the international market, CM experienced getting caught up in a downward spiral of rising costs, outdated technology, poor quality products and declining market share, in the last 20 years.  At this day and age, innovation and fair competition play an important role in the company’s performance.

The management has been seeking the assistance of the Australian government to keep the company afloat.  They are protected from overseas competition and have continually given financial support to continue its struggling operations.  The company’s performance is also affected by its rigid ‘promotion from within’ and ‘no termination to non-performers policy’ culture.

The combination of being a large employer, a powerful union, and a very active political lobbying have made the authoritarian management style and bureaucratic corporate culture company difficult to respond to the continuous environment change.  Instead of trying to innovate and lower down prices, the company and its members stressed the government to reinforce the ‘Buy Australian, Protect Australian jobs’ campaign to safeguard the business making the country less globally competitive and might also entail violation of the international trade agreements.

The dilemma has come to the Australian government as they are trying to heed to the company’s call of protection and patriotism while forging alliances to the international partners for the growth of the country’s economy.
