Question 1:

Part 1: How do you keep hotel staff happy? Describe 2 ways from the article.

Part 2: Why is it important to use multiple different strategies to motivate employees?

Keeping staff happy is one of the most important aspects about managing. Not necessarily meaning to have a party after every shift to keep the employees happy, but meeting the needs of the employees is crucial. Why? The most workers, majority speaking, of a company are the ones in the lower pay end and sometimes the dirtiest jobs. When management meets the needs of the vast of their employees, management is not only are showing their employees that they care about their jobs, but for the overall wellbeing of the company as well. In the article it states that, “The new vacuums make a big difference to employees…in performance and moral”(Dvorak). When employees have better, safer, and more efficient equipment to use for their jobs; then there are less distinct complications with finishing the job. For example: what if the old vacuum went dead, and the managers refused to replace the vacuum or they didn’t have time to replace it that day. It would take that one employee so much more extra time to finish cleaning the rooms and may even delay or cause some guests to not be able to keep their reservations because management failed to hear the employees needs for getting the job done. Also, replacing the vacuums every year would create efficiency in the quickness for cleaning each room. New vacuums equal easier clean, no dust bunnies clogging the system and not as much fibers caught in the bristles of the vacuum. Another reason for keeping employees happy would mean fewer turnovers for most jobs. Again, the article states, “Satisfied workers stay in their jobs longer, and they treat customers better, experts say”(Dvorak). Maybe with the extra time the cleaning employees have for the room, the employees could learn how to make the cool towel-animals to put on the bed if they know a family with kids is staying in that room next, to even leave mints and extra note pads and pens for someone who is staying on business, or even to be able to finish one more room they didn’t think they would be able to finish that day. Happy employees care more about their jobs and they will go the extra mile because they realize the company does what they can for them to go the extra mile as well. If managers would see what goes around comes around, then the employees that don’t give their 100% would maybe understand why or would want to.

Using different motivating strategies with employees is apart of the managers’ decision making process, ethical and corporate responsibility, and managing a diverse workforce. Everyone is different, that is the key factor in this situation. Different situations and factors motivate different employees. Some people
