Is creativity important in decision making?

Why do decisions matter to us? Is it necessary for us to make a decision? In this essay we shall review some definitions of decision making and also creativity. How decision making leads to creativity, and how the decision maker could find the suitable alternatives by considering the value. We shall investigate the correlation of creative thinkers with their innovation. At last the questions below will be answered based on business study.

In simple words, Gelatt (2003) defined decision making as something that we know as well as something that we believe so that we have several choices to get what we want. But of course the result that we get, will often unpredictable or in other words, it will not exactly the way we have thought before. In fact, Gelatt’s argument is strengthened by Clemen & Gregory (1995) who continued with the definition by saying that people will be facing different choices or alternatives which lead to some consequences and some of those consequences could be in a good way or the reverse side which is the bad way. Both types of consequences are determined by ‘value’.

According to decision making aims, value plays a big role in many objectives especially in determining the goals and purposes of the decision maker. Life is complicated and so are decisions, often many options occur with lots of alternatives. For example, great marks will be given to a person who works and studies hard on his project, or when a certain people think to get into a popular university but at the same time, they are also having a desire to have a luxury material such as a car, in that case they will need to work extra hard unless they would drop one of their intentions. As we know, we should prioritise work over leisure if we are talking about the value (Clemen & Gregory 1995). Therefore the answer from the previous questions, it is going to be yes, decision does matter to us because it provides value which brings out many alternatives that we can choose. Each alternative that we take will be equivalent to the consequence that we are going to live with either a good way or the bad way. In summary, decision impacts our live, so be really careful in deciding the alternatives.

‘Life is a sequence of decisions’ that is what Borcherding and Schaefer (1982) stated. Trough many of decisions are more or less trivial and do not require a heavy thought to decide, some decisions are important. We will assume that the decision maker will
