Executive Summary

The following document examines a business problem and develops a solution best suited to the monetary resources and nature of the business experiencing difficulty. The problem itself, how to avoid work delays and repair expenses as a result of damages to equipment, a brief background on the business and its first gut reactions to the problem are first listed. Than the various analytical techniques used to evaluate its causes, effects, possible solutions as well as an implementation plan are presented. Charts and graphs have been included to support the findings at the end of the paper. Special attention has been paid to the benefits of each process as they were explored. The final, most cost effective, solution emerged as increased training for the employees to improve safety, awareness and maintenance when operating equipment.

Introduction

A custodial maintenance company with many areas of responsibility and lots of expensive equipment used to meet those responsibilities has been experiencing excessive repair cost related to on the job damages. The business is looking to reduce these cost and the related cost of extra man hours to complete assigned tasks due to down time of equipment. To evaluate the problem and identify its probable causes I have applied several analytical tools. From this process a clearly defined problem statement has emerged: How to avoid work delays and repair expenses as a result of damages to equipment.

Background

The equipment needed to meet the clients and businesses expectation is breaking weekly and sometimes daily. That is compressors burning out, motors failing to function, brushes and pads needing replaced more and more frequently, handles breaking and cracking and cords fraying or becoming detached. The downtime generated by these breakage results in repeated work, extra man hours not billable to the client and additional expenses to the company for repairs. The extra expenses are not currently built into existing contracts and cannot continue if the business is to prosper. The company owner and president, has initially speculated that the misuse of the equipment, lack of proper training and an “I don’t care” attitude on the part of employees is the cause.
