Critical Thinking

Introduction

In todays’ world the main factors characterizing organizations and corporations are enormous complexity and heterogeneity of the internal and external environments where managers have to operate and help their organizations survive and grow. Browne and Keely method gives us a rich multidimensional analytical tool to manage business issues, and at the same this method helps to reduce the complexity of analysis by grouping strategic patterns into 10 step critical thinking model. In this paper I will analyze business document concerning intent to privatize State DMV information systems management function. For my analysis I will use 10 steps critical thinking process described by Neil Browne and Stuart Keely in the book “Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking (Tenth Edition). The authors define critical thinking as: “1) awareness of a set of interrelated critical questions; 2) ability to ask and answer critical questions at appropriate times; and the 3) desire to actively use the critical questions.”(Browne & Neely, 2010, p.2)

What are the issue and the conclusion?

The issue is State’s intent to outsource and privatize the information systems management function within the Department of Motor Vehicle’s which will result in laying off 75 state employees, 43 of whom are members of APEU. This is a prescriptive issue, which is explicitly stated. The conclusion that Mary Ford comes with is that President of APEU should rebut the governor’s proposal.
