Decision-making refers to the cognitive process of a logical, choice selection that results in choosing a course of action from several available alternatives. The thought process involves setting objectives and goals through gathering information that may or may not prompt a final course of action (Shapira, 1997). Media, politics, and governance exist in an intertwined relationship that puts decision-making concept top on their priority list. Additionally, media has an increased influence on the general population, politician’s behavior as well as the functioning of political institutions. Therefore, the governance of what media institutions report to the public has to do a lot with whatever decisions they make. Media institutions can gather information and in the past they could not freely publicize some issues. However, media institutions have now liaised with the government and through decision-making and deliberating panels carefully dispense real information to the  and in an ethical manner. Decisions making has played a major part in increasing the importance and value of media institutions and information awareness globally (Dekker, 2014).

Importance of Decision-making to media institutions.

Some of the decision-making importance linked to media institutions include; increased accountability and quality of what they reported to the public. It has also impacted significantly on increased awareness and inclusion of women in media and better links between journalists and the government actors. Through participatory decision-making, media institutions have also managed to reduce the political bureaucracy that most media management members establish; in order to gain favors from the government. Decision-making plays an important role in such institutions in governing what is ethically right for the public’s view and the policies governing the same. Lastly, effective decision-making in media institutions and their coverage on current issues greatly impacts on policy makers and the public perception; as result enhancing transparency and accountability (Dekker, 2014).

Steps of Decision-making Process

An effective decision-making process involves seven distinctive steps that define the essential elements that make up the process model. The step-by-step process   that constitutes the decision-making process, assists managers make more deliberate and cognitive decisions; therefore defining the alternatives and course of action. The decision-making process constitutes of the following steps (Shapira, 1997):
