The bond between the burrowing owl and the Florida Atlantic University community runs deep in the history of the land. Burrowing owls were designated to the Florida Atlantic University area in April of 1971, as an owl sanctuary by the Audubon Society, which is a non-profit organization that protects birds (Persaud, 2011). According the an old student newspaper known as Atlantic Sun, FAU held a ceremony that had the vice president of the Royal Palm Chapter of the society dig up holes signifying the denotation of the sanctuary. About 10 years later, the owl was named the mascot of the university.

Our team aims to project a positive statement of our owl relocation solution to the FAU community just as publicized as announcing the owl sanctuary in 1971 and the dubbing of FAU’s mascot as the burrowing owl in the 1980s. Through media sources of newspaper articles, web social media, radio, and activities in the FAU area, our team will successfully provide the assurance to the FAU community and prospective students of the owls’ well-being, while also noting the benefits of the medical building construction.

The Boca Raton campus contains 23,720 enrolled students roaming the campus and exposed to activities and fundraisers aspiring to build awareness for any specific cause. Our team will host its own awareness of the owl situation, relocation, and the building plans. This can be accomplished by setting up a burrowing owl mini fair that outlines our solution. The tables of the fair will demonstrate to students of the following:

• Burrowing owl facts

• Burrowing owl importance

• Current expansion construction dilemma

• Relocation solution

• Ways to volunteer in relocation process

• Floor plans and activities associated with new medical building

The burrowing owl fair will take place from 12-5 pm on the day of the next football game on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the Housing Lawn. The Housing Lawn is located within the FAU Boca campus at the address of 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida and outside of the on-campus housing. This area is appropriate for the burrowing owl fair because all students living on-campus must walk through there to get to their dorms and is visible to all commuter staff and students parking in the B, C, and D lot.

The number of students living on-campus is 56% of freshman and 12% of all students in Boca Raton campus (College Profile, 2011). The sum equals approximately 10,000 students easily accessible to the Housing Lawn. Our team would like to inform as many people as possible of the burrowing owl situation and the people living on compass are a priority in providing informational and positive media of the university that they live in.
