        In 2006, Nintendo presented its cutting edge video game console “the Wii.” This new console introduced an innovative motion sensor game controller that empowered a user to swing it in the air when playing video games, for instance to impersonate the movements of a batter, bowler, tennis player, or boxer.  No other gaming console had ever given the user this much collaboration. The Wii had created a new gaming experience that its rivals the Microsoft Xbox and Sony Play Station had difficulty competing with.  Nintendo’s business and financial achievement was perplexing, because not only did Nintendo sit behind Sony and Microsoft in terms of overall sales, but, unlike its rivals, it also determined the greater part of its income from the video game business. What made the Wii so popular, and could Nintendo continue finding innovative ways to satisfy its customers?  

        A critical issue to concentrate on here is the significance of intangible assets such as innovation and reputation. Particularly in mature brands such as Nintendo who is well known for the NES, DS, and GameCube, maintaining reputation is essential. In an industry where innovation made a competitive advantage, it was no big surprise Nintendo was so successful.

        Nintendo’s strategy for the Wii was to make a video game system that would separate itself from the Play Station and the Xbox. Nintendo’s designers created differentiation by adding an innovative motion sensor controller that let the player become a physical part of the game. Nintendo redeveloped the controller to make it an expansion of the player’s body, empowering a player to utilize their body’s movement to showcase the activity that the figure would do on the screen, for example, swing a tennis racquet, rolling a bowling ball down the alley lane, or throw a left hook.  This motion sensor controller was exceptionally effective in separating the Wii from other game consoles that utilized the traditional button and joystick controller. The Wii control proved very successful for Nintendo, exhibited by higher than anticipated interest when it was initially presented. The gaming industry likewise embraced the new motion sensor controller and video game designers demonstrated a solid enthusiasm for making new titles to be played on the Wii.  Nintendo’s differentiation strategy demonstrated more effective than even Nintendo had imagined.

        Nintendo made an uncontested business sector by creating a product that was really innovative, guaranteeing that no other game console could imitate its experience. By including a motion sensor controller, the Wii made the competition of other systems irrelevant. The Xbox and Play Station did not have the ability to create the same action packed experience that the Wii advertised. Nintendo likewise caught new request by making the framework for everybody. It effectively focused on ladies and more established demographics that were not effectively in the gaming market, and the Wii was valued at a large portion of the cost of the other two systems, making it more reasonable to a more extensive group of onlookers Nintendo may have succeeded in seeking differentiation and minimal cost simultaneously by developing the motion sensor controller and conveying it at a low cost.
