Application Form Top 10 Points

A guide to the Top 10 points to consider when completing an application form:

  1. Get organised

Before you start, have your CV ready and any useful background info about the company; make sure you understand what competencies the company values and that you have understood the essential and desirable characteristics for the job.

  1. Don’t give up…

The reason that companies make applications forms complicated to fill in is to screen out applicants who can’t be bothered!  The theory is that only people who are serious about working for the company will apply. Persevere if the company is on your target list and dedicate considerable time to ensuring you do your very best.

  1. Answer the question

Give examples that are relevant to the question asked, don’t just volunteer information you think they will want to see. Make sure you have answered the question fully, especially if the question has multiple parts to it - but always keep to the word count. Using the STAR technique for competency questions will ensure you don’t leave vital parts out.

  1. Quality not quantity

Try to keep your answers to the point - use the available space and word limits (if applicable) but try not to ramble. Use the STAR technique wherever possible.

  1. Variety is the spice of life!

Try to take your examples from different places you’ve worked/experiences you’ve had. Make your examples interesting to the reader and ensure you demonstrate your skills and abilities with actual evidence. Avoid generic statements that could be made by anyone.

  1. Get personal!

Tailor your answers to the company you’re applying for - having done your research before you start. Don’t copy and paste answers you have used on other application forms - recruiters can often tell if your answers look too generic. Using the wrong company name or job title only serves to tell the recruiter that you have not paid attention to detail and that you have copied your answers from one application to another.
