Guidelines

Please note that the most successful papers are researched throughout the term by reading and investigating widely. Students who share their findings and ideas at the regular twice or thrice weekly team meetings seem to score better on the final papers. This appears to be linked to allowing the idea to evolve, planning for and executing further and more appropriate investigations and communicating effectively.

Also note that the order of preparing the report would be:

  • Prepare a personal project plan with diarised activities and milestones ( a good idea to make a reading list of sources to investigate to help you with your project)
  • Read something every day, take notes, and think
  • Prepare a group project plan with diarised activities and milestones
  • Meet weekly to share ideas and work the plan, track your progress to the project plan and document in a status report with attendance log (24 logs for 24 meetings, to be submitted in the appendix of the report - counts for up to 15%)
  • Preparation for Lectures & Tutorials

(Continued on next page)

  • Attendance at Lectures & Tutorials with engagement which counts for up to 15% - engagement means speaking, contributing, note taking and revision - e.g. think about 'How do I apply this theory/information to our project?
  • Prepare an outline of your report
  • Prepare and review with your tutor a draft of your report up to 4 weeks in advance of the assessment due date
  • Write the report itself including the conclusion but NOT the Executive Summary
  • Once you are happy that the conclusion is succinct - re-write it in the future tense and label it the Exec Summary
  • Check that the report conforms to format & guidelines
  • Higher scoring papers usually also conform to marking guidelines (see section 5 in course handbook)
  • Have a third party read it for errors in format, grammar, spelling and continuity, then correct it as required
