Broken dreams, a very common theme all throughout the book of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. George and Curley’s wife they have dreams, but they’re only dreams. For them the reality is that they will never achieve their goal. Somehow or someway they all ended up just living the Ranch life. The environment of each character finds a way to hold them down, a way for them to never achieve their overall goal in life.

George, a strong, sharp and aggressive character who cares for Lennie ( his partner in crime). The only thing that George could hope to achieve was the “American Dream”. As stated by George “O.K. Someday—we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and—” “An’ live off the fatta the lan’,” Lennie shouted. “An’ have rabbits. Go on, George! Tell about what we’re gonna have in the garden and about the rabbits in the cages” (p. ). In my opinion George could easily achieve this dream, but the only thing holding him down is Lennie. Lennie is the one constantly putting George in trouble and there for delaying or possibly removing the “american dream” from George’s plan. George would merely doom his own dream due to the fact that he voluntarily takes care of Lennie.

Curley’s Wife, a flirt on the ranch of which George and Lennie work on. Curley’s wife is also a big flirt around everyone in the ranch. Curley’s Wife’s dreams is to live life as a Movie star. As stated by Curley’s Wife “Nother time I met a guy, an’ he was in pitchers. Went out to the Riverside Dance Palace with him. He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural. Soon’s he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write to me about it.” She looked closely at Lennie to see whether she was impressing him. “I never got that letter,” Curley’s Wife was merely Manipulated
