With age comes wisdom. This is why in almost every society and every culture elderly are given the utmost respect; this is due to their countless life experiences. When it comes to the jade peony this statement holds true.

 

I believe that in the jade peony poh-poh is a central character, and the characters in the novel are developed through her  . this  can be seen by how she plays a fairly large part in each of the three narrator’s lives.

a) poh-poh’s relation ship with Sekki, and how she took care of him when he was sick, and she used to treat him really good compared to his other siblings and he inherited poh-poh precious jade peony . And when she died he became would see here ghost.

b) poh-poh helped jung sum realize his sexuality and she made him of about it evan though it is not accepted in their culture.

Out of all the characters in the novel I think poh-poh had the greatest impact on sekky.this is mainly do to the fact that sekky spent most of his time with his grandmother, this has had a great impact on sekky’s life.

Supporting point # 1:

poh-poh had immense impact on sekky’s life, mainly due to the fact sekky battled with a lot of illness for the majority of his childhood so he was not able to attend school, thus resulting in his receiving a lot of attention from his grandmother.

  • “Chinatown people turned away, muttering behind my back. Poor Sek-Lung... spent all his seven years with Poh-Poh... he can’t get over it” – (choy,178)

Commentary for proof # 1 (discuss the significance of the proof as evidence for point # 1):

this quote shows that sekky was very close to poh-poh due to the fact he spent most of his childhood with her.

Supporting point # 2:

Due to his illness sek-lung had very little friends because no one wanted to hang out with him. Poh-poh would keep him company and take him with her when he was looking for parts for her wind chimes. Essentially she was his only friend.
