Book Review

Management Skills

Professor Kristin Berry

Please select one of the following books on the list below to read and write a short reflection.  All of these books discuss leadership albeit from different angles.  The reflection will be due June 10, 2016.  Books can be found on Amazon.es.

Your reflection should take several things into account and should not be longer than 1-1,5 typed pages long.  Your grade will take into account how you incorporate the answers to the following questions.  They need not be answered in any order and your responses should not be numbered but rather should be written out in paragraph or prose form.  Your opinions are welcome and encouraged but also should be supported by information and even quotes from the book.  Please check for grammar and spelling errors as I will take this into consideration for your grade.  Written communication is important!

  1. What were the main points the author/s wanted to communicate?
  2. What were the most informative, interesting, new (to you), key parts of the book in your opinion?
  3. Which information will you try to apply in your roles as manager/leader?
  4. What information do you feel you would like to know more about after reading this book?
  5. Please give concrete, real examples of where you have seen some of the main principles from the book used by a leader you have worked with or seen in action (perhaps even in politics).  This should not be an example from the book but from your own observation.

Books:

1.  Primal Leadership. Unleashing the Power of Emotional Intelligence.    By Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, Annie McKee

2.  The Wall Street Journal. Essential Guide to Management.  By Alan Murray

3.  Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing.  By Donald B. Egolf, Ph.d.

4.  Compelling People.  The Hidden Qualities that make us Influential.  By John Neffinger and Matthew Kohut

5.  How to Make Friends and Influence People.  By Dale Carnegie

If you have any questions about which book you might like to read, feel free to ask me if the explanation online does not give sufficient guidance.
