Discrimination DBQ outline

Intro:

Thesis: During the early twentieth century ghastly slums and discrimination against African Americans was a national issue that was addressed dissimilarly by two admirable men; Booker T. Washington stressed the education of practical skills and patience are essential to acquiring respect in a white man society; however, more effectivly W.E.B. Dubois believed the education of modern culture and persistence would help the American Negro to achieve a status as an equal in a society of racial discrimination.

Paragraph II: Booker T. Washington's strategy to eliminate discrimination of blacks was that of loyalty to the white man.

1.) (Doc. D) Washington believed Negros should not act out but instead be patient and gain the trust of thy neighbor's.

a.) Atlantic Compromise Address: An agreement between African American leaders and southern white leaders.

i.)Blacks would work for the whites, and the whites would provide basic education, or funds to black charities.

ii.) Blacks would not ask for the right to vote.

iv.) The more Negros working for white men, the less black's would live in slums

c.) Providing the children with practical skills that would be useful to help provide them with the ability and knowledge to be able to live as a respected working citizen.

3.) Washington's strategy was valid to this time period because many thought blacks were uneducated, and only useful for simple work.
