Course Description:  Academic Recovery is a two credit, letter grade course requiring students to complete weekly modules, to participate during weekly class discussions/activities, and to compose well-written reflection papers as they move toward academic success.  The course has a $22.00 fee.


Class Times:  Students are required to choose and to attend one of the four time options each week of the semester.

Thursday     3pm-3:50pm         TH 020

Course Standards and Policies:

In our class:

  1. Everyone is allowed to feel he/she can work and learn in a safe and caring environment
  2. Everyone matters.  All individuals are to be respected and treated with dignity and civility.
  3. Everyone shares the responsibility for making our class a positive and better place to work and learn by arriving on time, being prepared, participating actively, limiting distractions (turning off cell phones/other devices), and listening attentively to the instructor, presenters, and each other in a respectful manner and with an open mind.
  4. Since this is an active learning class, attendance is required each week..  Each absence will have a negative effect on your grade.  If you cannot attend, let me know in advance.  In-class assignments and activities will not be allowed to be made up.
  5. If absent, new assigned modules and reflection papers are allowed to be completed.
  6. Modules and Reflection papers are due at the beginning of each class.  
    No late work will be accepted!

Student Learning Outcomes:  
Upon completion of this course students will

  • Know the location, contact information, and available services of at  least 5 campus resources to assist them in being successful
  • Understand  their personal strengths and weaknesses to overcome their challenges
  • Understand the reasons for their academic probation status
  • Be able to balance academics, employment, family, and recreation
  • Be able to set specific and measurable short-term and long-term goals and create an effective success plan
  • Know how to communicate in a professional manner with faculty, staff, and peers
  • Know how to effectively track their progress in a class, plus be able to figure their GPA
  • Be able to distinguish between fact and opinion
  • Understand the difference in cause/effect and correlation
  • Know how to discuss and write about social issues/problems and current events with an open-mind, without bias
  • Be able to define Academic Integrity and evaluate a variety of scenarios

 

Course Requirements and Student Evaluation:  Guidelines and due date will be provided in class for each assignment.   A score sheet is provided for you to track your progress.  Each assignment you complete measures your understanding of the topic.
1. Modules (14 worth 10 points each):    Assigned each week.  Completion of each one will assist the student in preparing for class discussion and activities.   Due the beginning of next class.
2.  Reflection Papers (12 worth 40 points each):  Typed, double-spaced, written from first person point of view.  Graded mainly on content, but organization, professionalism, grammar, mechanics and spelling will also be assessed.  The modules, class discussions, and activities will be preparation for the topic of the paper.   Due the beginning of the following class.
