CHAPTER ONE

1.1INTRODUCTION

The Students Work Experience Programme (SWEP) is a programme that is geared towards informing the young engineers about the industry. During this SWEP programme; the indoor electrification of the chemical engineering department and the outdoor electrification of the university community, automobile operation, block laying, block moulding, concrete work, foundry work in which the cooking pot was produced and the design of an electrical circuit were done. This programme lasted for five weeks

  1.  MOTIVATION AND OBJECTIVE

The Students Work Experience Programme (SWEP) is a programme geared towards:

  • Giving the students the necessary experience on engineering disciplines.
  • Making the students aware of what they are up against in the real industrial setting.

 1.3 STRUCTURE OF THE REPORT

The report is graced with the following chapters:

Chapter one introduces the report, highlights the motivation and the objectives and the structure of the report.

Chapter two involves the literature review of works that has been done on the different subjects of study.

Chapter three involves the work done during the SWEP

Chapter four is about the discussion based on the work done and the experience gained during the work done.

Chapter five concludes the report.

CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 INDOOR ELECTRIFICATION

The loop-in method of wiring is the normal method of wiring lighting points final sub-circuits. With this type of wiring, there are no soldered joints needed in the circuit wires.

One point control of a lighting point located in a place like bedroom, corridor/passage ways, staircase and many others is not always convenient. For convenience of the user, two point controls is highly necessary.

Lighting points can be controlled from three or four separate locations within the premises. This switching is made possible by the use of one or two intermediate switches in conjunction with two, 2-way switches. This switching system is common in school, hotels, big building, offices and many others.

Socket outlets are installed in convenient locations in the consumer’s installation to supply portable appliances via plugs and flexible cables connections. The most common type of socket outlets in use is the 13A, three terminal (live, neutral and earth) type. The associated plug-in plugs have fuse in the live terminal to protect the portable appliance against excess current. The fuse could be 3A, 5A and 13A depending on the requirement. There is also the 15A power socket outlet used for air conditioners and small motors. The ring and the radial circuit are used for domestic wiring. The ring circuit has the advantage of providing the alternate route of supply to any appliance or apparatus in the event of a fault on the other.
