What are physiological disorders ?

A physiological disease is a disease where the organs or the systems in the body malfunction, which then go on to cause illnesses. Some examples are asthma, hypertension, diabetes, glaucoma, and strokes.

Asthma

Asthma is a disease that affects the airways that are in charge of carrying air to and from your lungs. It is a chronic illness, and it affects around 5.4 million people in the UK today. Three people die every day due to asthma but these deaths can be easily avoided. When someone is said to be asthmatic, the inside walls of their airways are inflamed or swollen, this makes the airways extremely sensitive to irritation and then it increases the risk of an allergic reaction.

The airways become narrower, due to the inflammation, which means that less air can pass through to and from the lungs.

Symptoms of asthma include wheezing (a hissing sound whilst breathing), tightness of the chest, problems with breathing, and also coughing. People who suffer from asthma usually experience these symptoms a lot more frequently during the night and throughout the early morning.

Asthma is an incurable disease. However, there is a lot of good treatment and management which can help control the illness, allowing the person to live a normal and active life.

There are quite a few possible difficulties which could arise when diagnosing asthma. If you feel like you are suffering severely with the symptoms above,  you should first go to your GP and they will be able to make a diagnosis.

You will endure a number of test that will determine the severity of asthma. Tests such as:

Peak expiratory flow test: this measures how fast you can blow air out of your lungs in one breath. this test requires quite a bit of practice in order to get it right, and so your GP or nurse will take two or three readings.
