Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder characterized by lack of focus, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and distractibility. It is a chronic condition that begins in childhood and somewhat goes on through adulthood. ADHD becomes more prevalent with each passing year and it has yet to be diagnosed with a direct cause and treatment. With no direct cause, how can we be sure that society isn’t misdiagnosing simple behavioral problems? So many questions remain to be unanswered about ADHD. Can children and adult lead a relatively normal life with the help of behavioral therapy and medications? I believe with more research anything can be accomplished. With what I have read about studies on treatments and symptoms, researchers are grasping a pretty good understanding ADHD. I can’t wait to see ten years down the road what they have accomplished with their research.

One of my best friends in elementary school was diagnosed with ADHD so I was more than happy to do this research paper and get more understanding of what she went through when we were kids. When we were in the same class she was always making bad decisions. At the time we all thought it was funny and fascinating but I now realize that she was acting on impulse without thinking of any of the consequences. She would not listen to instructions so I had to explain to her that her homework was completely wrong. We fought constantly because she was very hard to be around but I stuck around because I knew she was a nice person and that she would be there for me if I ever needed her. It’s been 12 years since I first met her and she has improved tremendously. I always thought she would be the one to drop out of high school but medication and support helped her accomplish a lot of major goals such as graduating and joining the Navy. It makes me believe that ADHD is not on the rise as expected,
