Theories of ageing

Negatives of ageing.

-less energy

-nearer towards death

-physically challenged in certain areas.

-reflexes aren’t as good (they become slower)

Positives of ageing.

-Wisdom

-More intellectual

-Emotionally stable

-Spend more time with loved ones (family, friends)

Social disengagement theory

-The social disengagement theory is that people tend to withdraw from social contact with others in their community or in social environments, due to reduced social health and also loss of social opportunities.

This theory was first proposed by Cumming in 1975 he claimed that it is natural for elders to disengage.

He stated, ‘Old people don’t have the mental resources and physical when they were young’

For example, Christine is a 79 year old woman who has lost her husband very recently who was with her and by her side for 47 years, has stopped going to the places they went together because it brings back memories for her, she has lost contact with friends that her and her husband associated themselves with also, this has led to her emotionally to feel weak and worthless without her husband

In context

  • Ageing is seen as a negative withdrawal from society
  • For many, this happens when they stop working

A large number also were due to a partner dying.

Activity theory

  • The Activity theory is that elderly people are still taking part within activities whether it’s within a care home or their homes this could be yoga, sports or even mental games keeping their brains stimulated.
  • Older people need to stay mentally and socially active in order to limit the chances of being disengaged
  • The activity theory means that the individual maintains their independence
  • Allows them to make choices for themselves.
  • According to national stats from 2006 79% of 65 year olds see a relative or a friend once a week.

Example

For example, Miguel a 67 year old male recently lost his wife of 39 years, they spent all the time they had together and with their family and friends, Miguel was aware of the Social Disengagement theory and didn’t want to fall into that bracket, so when his wife died Miguel made sure he still went to visit family and friends, but he was aware that still left time when he was with his wife which would make him reminisce the past.

Miguel joined a walking football league to gill this time to keep his mind sufficiently trained and also to keep him socially engaged with society.
