I did not have a paper to enter but I needed help on an assignment. I apologize if someone actually tried to read this. An interesting article was released on Science Daily on May 28, 2012, regarding a new image discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope. The image was of a “spiral within a spiral”. The spiral galaxy is known as ESO 498-G5. The galaxy itself has an interesting feature! Its spiral arms wind all the way into the center of the galaxy; therefore, the core of the galaxy looks like a miniature spiral galaxy. This interesting feature brings high contrast to the elliptical star-filled bulges of other galaxies which appear as illuminated masses.

The spiral galaxy, ESO 498-G5 is located in the constellation of Pyxis, also known as The Compass. It is approximately 100 million light-years away. The beautiful image taken by the Hubble Telescope was taken by Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys. The photographic technique used in the image is made up of exposures in visible and infrared light.

This galaxy has a disc-type bulge, also known as a pseudobulge with a bright elliptical center known as a classic bulge. The images produced by the Hubble Telescope have helped astronomers in comparing the existence of these two completely different types of galactic centers. The observations have actually shown that the star formation is still continuing in disc-type bulges formation and has ceased in the classical bulges form. The article also, interestingly enough, compares the galaxies to “Russian matryoshka dolls”: meaning that the classical bulge looks like a mini elliptical galaxy set in a spiral, while the disc-type looks like a smaller spiral galaxy within the first spiral. Basically, it produces the formation of a spiral within a spiral.
