The Scientific Method

Simply stated the scientific method is taking an observation, asking questions about the observation, developing possible answers, testing those answers, then coming to a conclusion as to the most likely answer given the test results. Then at that point if the most likely answer is not feasible answer, given the test results, then process starts over again until the most feasible answer is found. The steps are simple, observation, question, answers, hypothesis = most likely answer, testing, and conclusion.

To show the scientific method I have chosen to share the results of my son’s science class experiment. I will give the results of plant growth. The most likely answer to the experiment is that plant growth follows sun light and warmth.
The scientific method starts with an observation. In this scenario the observation is that the plant uses the light for the process of photosynthesis. The Plant always grows in the direction of the sun. I am using a tomato plant for this experiment. The question that I am asking in this observation is why the Tomato grows towards the light and not away from it.

Possible answers to this question could be, (1) the wind blows the plant into the direction of the sun the plant. (2)The plant is attracted to the sunlight. Out of these possible answers I chose number 2, which I believe to be the most likely and probable answer for the tomato plant's behavior. To test the hypothesis I placed two tomato plants on my deck and two tomato plants in my garage. The plants on my deck are exposed to wind and 12 hours of sun light. The plants in my garage are exposed to 5 hours of sun light but no wind. In both cases all of the plants where growing and turning to face the sun. The most likely conclusion given these results is that the plants are attracted to the suns light.
If I would have used this experiment years ago I would have been able to grow house plants. I would buy plants to make my apartment more cozy but they always die due to no real sunlight.
