The gold standard became a major problem for the farmers, as it did not allow them the economic freedom they needed to thrive. The railroads charged exuberantly high prices for transporting crops in order to compete with foreign competition and offer large companies rebates and drawbacks. There was corruption in the government: the farmers were over-taxed, high protective tariffs were placed upon their crops, and were at the mercy of the agricultural trusts. Although government was mainly unsupportive of the farmers, the complaints of western farmers were very justifiable.
