Case study number 1

It has seen more than once that the public health issues, may call upon the best citizens for their lives.  It would be unfamiliar if it could not call upon those Who are already draining the power of the state for these lesser sacrifices, often not felt to be such by those concerned, in order to prevent us from being overwhelmed by efficiency. The purpose of the case is to promote the welfare and prevent procreation by those who have been judicially ascertained to be unintelligent. The Court found that the statute did not violate the Constitution. Justice Holmes made clear that Buck's challenge was not upon the medical procedure involved but on the process of the functional law. Since sterilization could not occur until a proper hearing had occurred at which the patient and an agent could be present and after the Circuit Court of the County and the Supreme Court of Appeals had reviewed the case, if so requested by the patient. Only after months of observation might the operation take place. That was enough to satisfy the Court that there was no Constitutional violation. Quoting the best interests of the state, Justice Holmes affirmed the value of a law like Virginia's in order to prevent the nation from "being overwhelmed with incompetence. I think today, the mentally disabled are much more accepted as members of society than at the time of Buck v. Bell. They are no longer viewed as helpless recipients of the state's compassion, but as people who can and should be treated with dignity and who are presumed to be competent to make decisions for themselves unless proved.

Case study number 2

The Bigger Picture campaign can reach a lot of youth and develop homegrown content and generate statewide prevention activism. The advantage of this campaign has been described in scholarly journal articles and National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine Public Health Literacy Roundtable, it has received numerous film and public health awards, and it was featured in some documentary which are good to address the social issues. Also, it concludes that health communication campaigns using youth-generated spoken about the social and environmental determinants of DM2 can contribute to a more comprehensive model of health literacy with potential to engage and activate youth around social determinants of DM2. In addition, using a digital media provides an opportunity for direct communication between individuals and large audiences with potential to contribute to social movements and to shape public discussion, and because youth are heavy users of social media. All these factors can change policies in schools, organizations, and neighborhoods and most likely can change the social norms of the student body. Therefore, in order to reverse the economic incentives, we need to target minority communities to respond to the interests that promote their products diabetes.
