Title IX is a controversial topic that has been up for discussion for many years now. Title IX is the first comprehensive federal law that bans sexual discrimination against students. It was put into place to guarantee equality for all. The law passed in 1972 stated that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, bed denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program.” After the passing of Title IX, there were people who went into a tailspin saying that the law will wipe out men’s sports programs. Some may believe this, but after seeing all the positive benefits of Title IX, I believe that sports programs in a school should be equal for both men and women.

There has been a strong opinion by people thinking that Title IX is not helping colleges at all, and that now, males are being discriminated against. David Fleming stated that “Ultimately Title IX hurts just as many athletes than it helps.” The reason he said this is because in his eyes, Title IX is eliminating male athletics. This may be true, but the other side of this argument is very strong. Title IX has opened the door for women all over the country. It has increased the amount of financial aid as well as athletic scholarships to those who may have never had to chance. Athletic Director from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Bob Thomas said that “It doesn’t hurt anybody; it helps us. It keeps us focused on our commitment to both genders meeting the requirements of the law and providing equitable opportunities for everyone.” Everyone whether its male or female should get the opportunity to participate at the collegiate level, and Title IX is helping in doing so.

Times have changed in our society due to the fact that women are becoming more of a threat to men. It has now been over 25 years since Title IX was passed, and numbers have shown the incredible progress it has made. The impact
