Disaster Prepare Plan

Sadly, most of us do not make a disaster plan until something bad happens and we realize how important a disaster plan is. Locally we are subjected to many natural disasters that could occur at any given time. One of my biggest worries around this area are structure fires, so today I’m going to create a plan in case of a natural disaster.

First, my family will meet up and create a first aid kit and a fire safe container full of our birth certificates, social security cards, healthy and non-perishable snacks and meals, water, bleach, clothes, bedding and everything else needed to survive in an emergency. We will need to make sure that we have enough materials to last us at least a week. We will also need to post emergency telephone numbers near our phones. Over a year ago my Aunt was at work while her work caught on fire, then soon found out that her home was also on fire as the fire spread fast. My aunt was not prepared and did not have anything together or any type of plan as to what she should do incase of an emergency. According to the Community Emergency Response Teams participant manual, only 40% of people think a natural disaster could occur (Disaster Preparedness, 13).  Unfortunately, it takes an unfortunate situation to become prepared, but now I’m more cautious and prepared if have to face a disaster.

Like most families we all have roles as to what our jobs are and who cleans what. Just like in a disaster we need to acknowledge those roles and be sure to make sure they are known amongst the family. One important role is to stay alert and updated if in a situation where a disaster could occur. As a family we will hopefully know and understand the hazards, local alerts and warning systems. Knowing and familiarizing ourselves with the hazards will be crucial when making big decisions, like shelter. While we all hope to understand the local alerts and warning systems, my parents will be listening for the most part, as my brother and I also have important jobs we could be doing. My brother’s job will be to make sure he has our dogs and all of our dog’s supplies. My jobs will be to collect the first aid kit and items we have prepared to take with us in case of an emergency. Another important role that I have taken on is to get my dad’s insulin and diabetic materials, as he’s a type 1 diabetic. My parents will also be responsible for shutting off water, gas and electricity switches if needed.
