Tikbalang’s Wedding: A Realization in Equality

The first time I heard the title of the DUP play made me asked on how will the character “tikbalang” be portrayed, or what is the gist of the story. As I stepped in the theater, took my A10 sit, I just realized that not all titles speak of its plot, theme or setting. The ambiance in the theater made me not to feel anything about a “tikbalang” or the fantasy behind it. The background of the stage play itself speaks loudly enough of a common reality in our so-called “new world”.

The totality of the play itself is fun. It gave not just only plain entertainment to every audience but also gave a grasp on what is happening in our world. They gave us a lighter approach of the hard core things, negativities, inequality, and status judgment in the real world. The way the characters projected was exhilarating. But despite of the fun, it lets you see through in the reality, the goal, and totality of the play. It serves as an awakening to us, who watched the play, to become extra cautious in our words and actions. It lets to be more aware of the needs of our community and our world.

On the first part, the criticism given to the mother is so judgmental that they based their opinions and judgments on her physical appearance. As we all know, a lot of people in our times judge the totality of a person by looking only at the physical aspects and not by looking in the inside or attitude itself. We seclude them in our society as if they have a contagious disease. We never stop and ask them what is the problem or if thereis something bothering them. Instead, we push them more down the mud just like how the neighbors of the character did to her.

Meanwhile, the talking dog served as an alarm clock of a sleeping person from a dark sleep. She awakens the main character, Jepoy, on what is the truth, on what is happening around him. She justified the equality needed
