In the story, “A Sorrowful Woman,” a wife and mother is very sick. Her husband takes care of her every night. He makes the woman’s medicine so that she can sleep at night, he dresses her in her night gown, and he also makes sure that all the chores in the house are completed each day. The husband also makes sure that their son is taken care of as well.

Although the husband took care of the couple’s son, he realizes that needs help around the house and taking care of the young boy. So to help, he found a girl that could help him look after the boy and take care of all the chores around their home. One day after spending time with the girl outside, the son brought a grasshopper back the house to give to his mother as a surprise. He placed the grasshopper in his mother’s hand and she was startled. The nanny said to her, “It’s only a grasshopper (Godwin).” After the girl and the son left the room, the mother told her husband, “The girl upsets me (Godwin).” Wanting to make his wife happy, the husband fired the young girl.

After firing the girl, the husband had to do all the chores around the house. One night after working all day, and then doing all the chores in the house, he fell asleep before tucking their son into bed or giving his wife her medicine. Because the father took up the entire bed, the son had nowhere to sleep, so he went down to his mother’s room. The mother went down to their son’s room and woke her husband and helped him back to their room. After some time passed, the mother started cooking when her husband and son left in the mornings. Even though she was sick, she would cook all morning. I believe the wife wanted to be the only woman of the house, but at the same time she wanted to escape her role as mother and wife.

In conclusion, both the husband and wife were very strong individuals. This story took place at their home during the winter in the 1970s. I feel like this was a sad story, because the wife
