TED Talk Analysis Essay

The TED Talk that I chose to do my analysis on is titled “This gel can make you stop bleeding instantly” and the speaker’s name is Joe Landolina.  Joe is a medical inventor that believes that he has made a product, a gel substance, that will close wounds faster and more efficient than traditional medical procedures such as stitches.  Overall, the general topic of the talk was discussing how effective this gel could be in emergency situations and how superior it is in comparison other methods of closing wounds.   Joe spoke in a serious tone throughout the talk and seemed to be very excited talking about the topic he was presenting.  I believe that Joe’s purpose of this talk was for him to express his opinion on how he is optimistic that he has invented a new product that will be useful in the medical field in providing a faster way to close wounds and stop harsh bleeding.  Joe Landolina demonstrated valid points regarding his new medical product and was educated in the area he was speaking about which allowed him to present an effective TED talk.

It was evident that Joe was very educated regarding how his gel would be the most effective and how it would react with the mechanisms in the human body in order to close wounds and stop them from bleeding.  Joe begins the talk with putting a mental picture in the audience’s head about being a soldier and getting shot in the leg.  He then proceeded on to talk about how he has made a new mechanism that he believes can heal that wound faster than waiting to have to get stitches by a medical professional.  The talk continued as Joe spoke about the product works in reaction to the tissues in your body and how the reaction will close wounds in an effective way.  The talk ended with how this medical advancement is being introduced to veterinarians already and he hopes that it will be in the hands of doctor and medical professionals in the next year.  The main mechanism that Joe spoke about that he believes will make it possible for the gel to work is the ecm.  “The ecm stands for the extra cellular matrix and this is responsible for healing wounds in your body.”  If you have a bad scar, it is a result of your body having bad ecm.  Without Joe describing the ecm and being educated on this mechanism in your body, he would not have been able to draw connections between the ecm and how the gel will react with it in order to heal wounds more effectively.  Joe included facts in his talk such as “it would usually take 5 minutes or more with pressure to stop your blood but with the gel it stops the bleed in less than 10 seconds.”  The use of this statistic allows the audience to be presented with a comparison of how fast the gel actually works compared to just applying pressure to a wound.  Joe used multiple effective ways to engage the audience and viewers in order to have people believe that his product is superior to others.
