Critical Analysis Essay

June 2, 2015

In article “Extreme Do-Gooders—What Makes Them Tick?”, Moore talks about how those social entrepreneurs motivate our society. At the beginning, the author gives us some examples of Do-Gooders and claims that these people are willing to solve the most hardest problems of the world (Moore, 2009). But only a few can become Do-Gooders. The reason why these social entrepreneurs can make big change is that they will not stop working until their goals are achieved (Moore, 2009). Finally, Moore mentions that self-definition can have big influence on people’s minds and behaviors. Generally, this article shows us a good topic, however, logical errors and insufficient evidence make her argument a little poor.

The first point is the author’s weakness in logic. One of the author’s argument is that we rely on these social entrepreneurs to help us to solve many social problems (Moore, 2009). Maybe it is true that many social entrepreneurs are making efforts to help others to fight against hunger, poverty and disease. On the other hand, the author also said that “only 1 social entrepreneur for every 10 million of the rest of us” (Moore, 2009, p.164). It means very few people dedicate to make others’ life better. How can we rely on only a few people? Actually, many social problems are being solved by social organizations or government, but not social entrepreneurs. For example, when the Ebola broke out, different countries sent their doctors and medical facilities to Africa. Scientists from World Health Organization were trying to produce vaccines of Ebola. The majority of aid comes from social organizations and government. Similarly, most African people, who suffer from hunger and disease, get help from government and organizations. Social entrepreneurs help us to solve social problems, but the public do not always rely on them to solve these problems. Therefore, this is the logical error.
